IS THIS A WELL-PLANNED CAMPAGN OF TERROR IN THE VILLAGES OF KIVU
Despite the fact that it is facing its own crisis, the town of Bukavu/Eastern Congo is currently being flooded with thousands of peoples fleeing violence, brutality and hunger from the surroundings villages.
The latest round-visit of almost all the villages of Kivu by Heritiers de la Justice reveals that some villages have been depopulated up to 26%. Heritiers de la Justice will be publishing details of its founding in coming releases on its Internet site.
What is that people are fleeing from villages surrounding Bukavu. What is it really behind this campaign of terror that seems to target deliberately the populations of the village of Kivu? Is it that the occupying forces of Kivu are preparing for a sort of 'final solution'? Or is it that the authors of these acts of violence are aiming at preventing the resistance from developing into a movement involving the peoples living in villages. Is it that the occupying powers are just preparing the ground for a big assault on their military opponent, often hiding in bushes and forests surrounding these villages? Or are the occupying powers just making sure the civilian populations pay the price of this war. HERITIERS DE LA JUSTICE would not at this point make public the conclusions of its founding.
According to Heritiers de la Justice's figures, about 70% of the villages of Kivu are almost cut off from the outside world and even the main towns of Kivu. This exodus, which this release is underlining, also affects the villages' populations usual income-generating activities. Accordingly, many members of these communities have seen their income dropping sharply and therefore cannot afford to provide themselves with daily needed product such as soap, cooking oil, salt, sugar and other basic foods. More than 52% of the people interviewed by Heritiers de la Justice confirmed not being able to afford these products anymore.
In villages such as Kalehe centre, Nindja, Kambegeti and others, where people have to walk long distances for reaching their farming lands that are often located far away from their habitations, people cannot continue going to their farms without putting their lives in serious danger. In Luhwuindja for example 6 young girls, who were on their way to farms, were raped by a group of armed men speaking both Swahili and Kinyarwada. Three of the victims are reported to be in serious conditions due, not only to the level of violence they were subjected to, but also the current quasi-inexistence of medical care in the region.
Last week, a young school boy, who is confirmed to had been studying at Kamole High School in Kabare, was murdered at Chirunga in Kabare district by a group of armed men. His body was found in the early hours of the morning, bearing several cuts, and severely tortured. Mr. Ngufu Kaniki Gilbert, 58 years old, manager of a Pharmakina Plantation was taken from his home to an unknown destination by a group of armed men.
The district of Uvira and the Ruzizi valley are facing a similar situation of insecurity, violence and threats by armed groups. The local population of villages, such as Sange and Luvungi feel like they have become hostages of uncontrolled armed groups fighting each other. An old lady from Sange made the following comment, when asked by the Heritiers de la Justice about the situation.
"I have not been able to go to my farm for the last five weeks. The last time I went there, I was intercepted by a group of men carrying guns, machetes, and other sort of weapons. These men were very aggressive, abusive and told me to never come back to my farm again. I do not know how I will survive. That land is my only source of income…"
In the town of Uvira, all streets and avenues are deserted around six in the afternoon. In the night, the town is a scene of various armed groups and gangs, which seems to be in continuous nightly competitions for the control of different parts of the city. Gunshots are often heard in the night throughout the town.
The districts of Kalehe and Bunyakiri are currently almost landlocked and cut off from the town of Bukavu. This is due to the continuing clashes between the armed forces of the rebel movement RCD and all armed bands, hostile to the occupation.
The town of Bukavu has started feeling the pressure from the increase in number of its population. Prices of basic foods, the rent and other commodities have gone up.
Where is it that the eastern part of Congo, in general and the Kivu in particular, is going?
