THE NEW ARCHBISHOP OF BUKAVU FELT UNWELL DURING HIS SWORNING IN.
Sunday June 3, 2001 the new Archbishop of Bukavu, Mr. Charles Mbogha Kambale, felt unwell while the ceremony of his consecration in taking of office was occurring. The incident happened at the front side of the Bukavu Cathedral, where the celebration was taking place. This ceremony was attended my millions of civilian populations who came to celebrate their new Archbishop after loosing the two in less than five years. Local political and military authorities in charge of the South Kivu region attended also the ceremony.
This celebration was also attended by the Cardinal of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mr. ETSOU who came from Kinshasa. The Cardinal was on a special mission of the Vatican, which commissioned him to go and conduct these celebrations. Were also present several archbishops, such as Mr. Mosengo Pasinya of Kisangani, Mr. Kaboyi from Kindu and Sikuli of Butembo, Ngabo of Goma and several other religious authorities.
The ceremony started at 9h30 am by a procession in front of the Cathedral. However, before everything, flowers were laid at the burial sites of the two previous Archbishops of Bukavu, Mr. Muzihirwa and Kataliko, who died few years ego.
Wearing a long red robe, Archbishop Charles Mbogha Kambale felt suddenly unwell just when he was about to be sworn in as the new Archbishop. He was immediately taken inside the cathedral where doctors Bula Bula and Janvier took care of him. From there, the Archbishop was taken to the General Hospital of Bukavu, where he was immediately taken into intensive care. Obviously devastated, the Cardinal, Mr. Etsou who was leading the ceremony broke the new to the public few minute later. Almost instantaneously, the population started …anti-RCD slogans.
Our sources inside the catholic church informed us the next day that the condition of the Archbishop remained serious. He has been now flown to Nairobi where he is said to continue being under intensive care.
In the streets of Bukavu, the people are very saddened by what happened to the new Archbishop. This incident has brought back into their memories the brutal and sudden death of the two previous Archbishops. However, the people continue to follow in calm all the incoming news on the state of health of the Archbishop.
Violent attack against civilian population around the village of Kaziba
The civilian populations of the village of Bunyakiri in South Kivu are living their homes and are heading towards Bukavu, the main town of South Kivu, and the local authorities is threatened of…by the RCD.
Mr. Dunia Masumbuko, the new administrative authority of the village of Bunyakiri since November 2000, is threatened to be sacked by the Governor of South Kivu. He is accused of having caused the current movement of civilian populations out of Bunyakiri by spreading false rumours relating to an imminent attack by the militia mai-mai.
Our sources confirm that Mr. Dunia Masumbuko asked the population of Bunyakiri to take security precautions following the ongoing withdrawal of Rwandese army from the area. This withdrawal is said to be justified by the increasing number of attacks of Interahamwe inside Rwanda. Obviously the withdrawal of rwandese soldiers from the Bunyakiri area has created a vacuum, which worries so much the Rebel movement whose military capabilities are limited. The departure of Mr. Dunia to Bukavu caused panic among the civilian populations who felt abandoned. From June 6, 2001 large number of people are leaving Bunyakiri. The Rwandese army who are leaving continue to loot anything they can put their hand on, on their way back to Rwanda. They also burn down anything belonging to them before leaving an area.
The Governor of South Kivu does not understand the point made by Mr. Dunia Masumbuko. On contrary, the Governor consider his leaving of Bunyakiri as an act of desertion and treason. The RCD consider also the leaving of Mr. Dunia creating a political vacuum that could be filed by the militia mai-mai.
The civilian population of Buzonga, a village found within the district of Mushenyi.Ngweshe-Walungu was attacked in the last two days by armed men, thought to be soldiers of the RCD based at Kaziba. Following this attack, six persons were injured by bullets. These victims are currently being treated at the Missionary hospital of the 5ieme CELPA/Kaziba. Furthermore, several families were victims of extortion by the very same armed men.
The persons who were injured are CHIRUZA Louis, BAFUKA Chalazire, CHUNVI Deogratias, CHISHIBANJI, BANSOMIRE Masika, et M'NABULUNDA. The morning following this incident, the goods that were looted by the armed group of men were found on the way to the local RCD military base. Some of our sources indicate that among the men who carried out the attack were soldiers of the RCD, based at Mwerwe/Kaziba. This could explain the reason why the RCD's soldiers did not intervene during the operation.
On the night of June 2, 2001 Mr. Mbirize Ntagereka, who is in his 50s, the local chief of the village of Ntagereka/Kaziba was attacked at home by a group of armed men. The victim was injured on his left shoulder. During his ordeal, the local chief was accused of being an informant of the Local Group of Auto-defence, created by the local population. In 1999, the same local chief was arrested and tortured by Banyamulenge soldiers who were accusing him of being mai-mai.
During this same incident, Mr. Barhuze Gedeon, who is 22 years old and resident of Chibirhi/Kazaiba was attacked at his home by unidentified men, said to belong to the Interahamwe group. The victim was injured on his shoulder. His is currently being looked after at the Hospital of Kaziba.
Also during last April, a group of armed men speaking Kinyarwada and Kifuliru broke into the property of Mr. Chishokomi Cha Muntu of the village of Kasheke/Kaziba. During this incident, the belonging of several members of the local community were looted. Despite the mobilisation of the local, six more people were 'visited' by the same group of men.
