The roads of Bukavu remain highly insecure and dangerous: Personnel of the UN Mission (MONUC) are both witnesses and victms
Tuesday September 4, 2001, Mr. Birhaheka was severly injured by gunfire around the Kivu airport of Kavumu, which is located 12 km away from the town of Bukavu. The attack is widely believed to have been perpetrated by soldiers of the rebel movement RCD, in control of the South Kivu region. The victim, Mr. Birhsheka, was on his motorbike when he was ambushed. During the same incident, two four wheel drive cars belonging to the Hospital FOMULAC Katana and one bus belonging to the local fret agency called Boyoma were also hurt.
The peoples on board all the vehicles involved in this incident were dispossessed of their belonging after being severely beaten up y the attackers. According to accounts of a number of people who witnessed the attack, the attackers were 7, two rwandese and five Congolese soldiers, and were all armed with automatic guns.
Monday September 3, 2001 personnel of the United Nation Mission in Congo (MONUC) were also attacked at Mushweshe, a village 10km away from Bukavu. The attack was the act of armed men, who had killed a number of Rwandese soldiers around the same area earlier. The MONUC personnel were dispossessed of all their telecommunications sets and US dollars 300.
The two attacks occurred within 24 hours. The late attack shows, among others, that the insecurity prevailing in the Kivu region is getting out of control. People have become hostages of various armed groups, which seems to operate freely.
All the main roads of the Kivu region have become very dangerous to drive on. On the road Bukavu-Uvira, for example, ambushes of vehicles carrying people and goods have become frequent. The latest attack of this kind occurred on September 9, when Banyamulenge soldiers under the RCD banner dispossessed people on board a passengers truck Fuso, which was on its way to Uvira.
Heritiers de la Justice denounce this climate of insecurity and call upon all the factions occupying the Kivu region of the Congo to assume their international obligations, which require that every life of civilian be protected.
