FACTS Since August 1998, Central Africa has been torn apart by a war, which has cost life to more than 8,000 civilians so far. About 1,800.000 children, women and elderly people have fled their homes and currently live rough as internally displaced persons, without any humanitarian assistance. As many as 35,000 children under the age of fifteen are reportedly taking an active part in the fighting as soldiers or in militias. Cholera, sleeping sickness, diarrhea, AIDS infection and many other epidemic diseases have erupted, causing death to about 12,000 people so far. This war is affecting 164,000.000 peoples, representing more than a 1/2 the population of the European Union and more than 2/3rds of the population of the United States. The coming Millennium offers an opportunity to make pressure on the fighting factions for a peaceful resolution of this devastating conflict. ACTION From the time you receive this message until the end of the next six months, - Please send a message to your government through your local Member of Parliament, Congress, ..., asking for pressure to be put on the parties to the Congo War for a peaceful resolution of this conflict. - Please make a copy of this message and send it to friends and colleagues of yours who may not be aware of the suffering being faced by millions of defenseless African children, women and elderly people. - Please read or publish this message in your local community meetings, churches, associations, public places, workshops, etc. Your call or action may save millions of human lives and be the best millennium present for 164,000.000 people of Africa.
