BUKAVU MOURNS KABILA (January 22, 2001 9am)

To the surprise of everyone, the populations of Bukavu have joined Kinshasa in mourning of Mr. Kabila. From yesterday night rumours suggested the populations of Bukavu will be taking two days in the mourning of Mr. Kabila, but nobody took it seriously. However, following these rumours, several calls for calm and live as usual were made.

This morning not a single market, shop, business, school, university, etc is opened. Even the public transportation is almost inoperative. Less than 1% of the taxis and minibuses are running. People seem to have followed Kinshasa as a result of the news reported by international radios.

It is understood that this situation will prevail until tomorrow, Tuesday. The public authorities in charge of the South Kivu region (RCD) have remained so far passive to this sudden interruption of all activities in the town of Bukavu. Despite the fact that few military patrols can still be seen in the streets of Bukavu, there has not been a strong action aiming at compelling people to open their businesses or go on with their lives as usual.

Reports from rural areas indicate also that the same situation is observed in Villages.

HERITIERS DE LA JUSTICE reiterates its call for calm at this very critical stage of the Congolese crisis.

We will keep you updated.
