Peace agreement between the Maï- Maï combatants and
the former rebel group RCD, in Kalonge, South Kivu
Province
On Saturday, 08.11.2003, the Maï-Maï combatants
based in Kalonge signed a peace agreement with the
former rebels of RCD. The ceremonies took place in
the shopping center of Cifunzi in front of the
population, considered as witness. The purpose of
this second peace agreement ,after that signed in
early September 2003 in the territory of Walungu, is
to build peace in this area where fightings have
lasted for several years. By the end of the meeting,
a drink was shared between the former enemies in
sign of reunification.
The population of Kalonge considered this accord as
marking the end of the war. On this occasion social
leaders of Kalonge invited the UN mission in Congo (
MONUC) to support this process so that real peace
can be restored.
By the way, Héritiers de la Justice
Congratulate these efforts made by the congolese to
restore peace in their country. However, the
presence of foreign milicious (Interahamwe) in that
area might frustrate this peacebuilding process on
view of the recent fightings in Mwenga between the
Maï-Maï who have joined the national army and the
Interahamwe their former allies. That is why it
invites the Commander of the 10th
brigade, General Prosper Nyabyolwa, to push forward
the process of rapatriement of rwandan combatants
and make sure that amry controls all the
territories.
