The human rights movement of South Kivu grieving for one of its prominent member

Mr. Pascal Kabungulu Kimbembi, Executive Director of Heritiers de la Justice, shot dead by armed men.

Mr. Pascal Kabungulu Kimbembi, Executive Director of Heritiers de la Justice, a leading human rights NGO based in South Kivu, was shot dead by armed men at around 3.30 am on Sunday 31 July 2005 at his family home.

The killers, two in jumpers and one in military uniform, broke into the house of the victim and went straight into the children’s bedroom asking for their father (Mr. Pascal Kabungulu Kimbembi). Awaken by the unusual noise, the wife of Mr. Pascal Kabungulu Kimbembi tried to reach the children’s bedroom. It is then that the killers entered the victim’s bedroom, led him into the living room and told him: “this is the day of your death”. Immediately after, the killers shot the victim in the stomach with several bullets.

This horrendous crime fits into a set of precedent targeted killings of several actives members of Heritiers de la Justice and continued threat to an increasing number of members of the civil society in South Kivu province.

Heritiers de la Justice calls upon national and provincial authorities to set up a commission of inquiry into the killing of its Executive Director, Mr. Pascal Kabungulu Kimbembi, and to bring to justice his killers.
