During
the night of 09/10/2005, 18 people were killed with crude
weapons (hammers, hoes, machetes, etc) by Interahamwe militia
in the village of Kaniola, Walungu territory in the Province

During that
massacre, the village received no help support neither from
the nationl army nor from the UN peace keepers based in
Walungu. The investigation team of the MONUC (United Nations’
Mission in Congo) that first went to the place were stopped by
the villagers who demonstrated to show their anger. One of the
demonstrators declared to us that they do not know the
importance of the MONUC forces are around their village if
they cannot stop these killings.
The National
Sucurity Agency arrested and detained, in Bukavu, Mr Fiston
Mushagalusa Lukula because of this demonstration.
Héritiers
de la Justice considers such an
arrest as a violation of Fiston Mushagalusa’s rights to
demonstrate since a similar demonstration organised by the
women from Kaniola area, occurred in Bukavu at the 10th
Military Region claiming for effective protection. The arrest
also violates the 16th and 30th articles
of Transitional Constitution guaranteeing people’s right to
demonstrate.
Héritiers
de la Justice requests the
government of Transition to set up urgent steps to drive away
all FDLR and Interahamwe militia from from the congolese soil
where they have been committing horrendous crimes against
humanity.
