WHO ORGANIZES
THE WORKSHOPS ?
Héritiers de la Justice
• A
non-profit organization dedicated to contribute to the promotion of human
rights and peace in the Great Lakes Region.
• Since
1991, Héritiers de la Justice has worked to defend the security, rights and
fundamental freedoms of the citizens of the Great Lakes region.
Héritiers de la Justice follows a double purpose :
To empower the weak so that they are
able to
claim their daily rights themselves.
To promote the justice, social
cohesion and
individual and collective critical
conscience
for a truly peaceful society.
Héritiers
de la Justice is based in Bukavu in the east of the Democratic Republic of
Congo (DRC). Its work is focused primarily on the DRC but its field of action
covers the whole of the Great Lakes region.
Héritiers
de la Justice is at the forefront in the region in human rights training,
research and monitoring. Its members have collaborated with the following
organizations in conferences and workshops: The German Association for Adult
Education (DVV), The Regional Program for Training and Exchanges for
Development (PREFED), the League for the Promotion of Human Rights in the Great
Lakes Region (LDGL), Human Rights Watch, International Human Rights Law Group,
...
TRAINING IS
AT THE HEART OF
HERITIERS DE LA JUSTICE
• Since
1994, Héritiers de la Justice has developed the following training programs:
Training of peace makers :
Héritiers
de la Justice has conducted 15 sessions in peace-making with altogether 315
local leaders. These sessions develop the skills required to promote justice, human rights, and
community cohesion.
Training of juridical instructors :
In these
workshops, leaders of local NGOs are taught the legal tools needed for human
rights advocacy. Héritiers has conducted more than 30 such workshops (more than
80 associations beneficiary).
Training of rural mediators :
These
workshops concentrate on how best to resolve and prevent conflicts in a rural
setting:
Training of public agents :
In these
sessions, civil servants are taught how to enforce the law while respecting the
fundamental civil liberties.
These
various trainings have strengthened the strong ethic of human rights in the
region and have caused local groups and organizations to evolve into networks.
These
workshops have created a group of NGO leaders qualified to teach the following
subjects:
- The
knowledge and promotion of human rights
- The
protection of human rights
- The
practice of lobbying and advocacy
- The
transformation of conflicts
- ...
In response
to a growing demand by human rights organizations in the region, Héritiers de
la Justice has conceived the two workshops described in this leaflet.
• These
workshops aim at :
- Solidifying the skills of human
rights defenders and conflict mediators in
the region
- Supporting the human rights
organiza- tions, churches, and civil servants in the region by putting a group of competent
instructors at their disposal
