S.O.S 49 CIVILIANS ARRESTED BY THE RCD IN THE UVIRA AREA ON SUNDAY 12 AUGUST 2001 (August 16,2001 6pm)

49 civilians, mostly school children, were arrested at Mulongwe II- Uvira by the RCD (the rebel movement in control of the Kivu region of the Congo) on Sunday 12, August 2001.

All the 49 people were afterwards taken to the main prison of Uvira, where most of them were detained for more than 12 hours without interrogation.

Those of the victims, who could mange to pay money to the soldiers, who were guarding the prison on that day, bought out their freedom. However, 4 of the victims continue to be held in this prison. There are fears that they might have already been forcibly enrolled in the RCD's army.

Our local sources of Uvira supplement this information by asserting that on the night if these arrests, soldiers of the RCD rounded up the whole city of Mulongwe around 5 am. They (the soldiers) then went house by house forcing the local people to give them money and anything they wanted. Those of the local people who did not have money to give were simply arrested.

Our investigation is still ongoing. However, according to an early assessment of the situation the following persons were among those arrested.

1.	Mukubwa Mu>
2.	Masabo
3.	Bwanga
4.	Kasigwa
5.	Mienne Lola
